Opening an account takes five steps and roughly three minutes for anyone with identification to hand. One of those steps is identity verification, and Ontario rules place it before the first deposit rather than after a first win. Knowing that in advance is the difference between a smooth start and a stalled one.

Before registration: what Ontario requires

Eligibility in the regulated Ontario market is narrower than in unregulated jurisdictions, and every condition below is a hard requirement rather than a preference. Accounts that fail any of them cannot be activated.
Eligibility
- Aged 19 or over
- Resident of Ontario
- Physically located in Ontario when wagering
- One account per person, per household address
Documents to have ready
- Government-issued photo identification
- Proof of Ontario residential address
- The payment method intended for the first deposit
Identity verification is required before the first deposit is accepted, not at the point of a first withdrawal. Delayed verification is the single most common source of complaints across the Canadian market, and moving it to the front of the process removes that risk entirely. Documents are checked once; they are requested again only when a new payment method is added to the account.
How to open an account, step by step
- About 30 secondsEnter a mobile number and date of birthDate of birth establishes eligibility under the provincial minimum age of 19. The mobile number becomes the primary identifier on the account and is used for security notifications.
- About 45 secondsAdd full name and Ontario addressThe name entered here must match the name on the identification document and on the payment method used later. A mismatch is the most frequent reason a first payout is held.
- About 30 secondsCreate a username and passwordPasswords should be unique to this account. Spin Genie never requests a password by email or in live chat.
- About 45 secondsSet deposit and loss limitsLimits are offered before the lobby opens rather than hidden in settings afterwards. Anyone who prefers to decide later can adjust them at any time from the account menu.
- Reviewed within 24 hoursUpload identification documentsPhoto ID and proof of address complete the account. Access to games remains restricted until this step clears.
One field surprises people: employment status. It is not marketing profiling. Regulated operators are required to hold source-of-funds context on file, and asking at registration avoids a follow-up request during a later payout review.
Identity verification: what Spin Genie checks and why
Three documents complete verification, and each has a specific requirement that determines whether it passes on the first attempt. Blurred images and cropped corners account for most rejections, followed by name mismatches between the document and the payment method.

| Document | What must be visible | Accepted formats |
|---|---|---|
| Photo identification | Full name, date of birth, expiry date, photograph and all four corners of the document | JPG, PNG or PDF · driver's licence, passport or provincial photo card |
| Proof of address | Full name, Ontario address and an issue date within the last three months | JPG, PNG or PDF · utility bill, bank statement or government correspondence |
| Payment method | Cardholder name and the last four digits. Middle digits should be covered. | JPG or PNG · photograph of the card, or a bank screenshot for Interac |
When a document is rejected
Card details appear on the reverse, not the front
Some Canadian debit and credit cards print the cardholder name and number on the back. A photograph of the front alone will fail the check. Both sides should be submitted, with the middle digits and the CVV covered.
The name does not match the account
The name on the identification, on the Spin Genie account and on the payment method must be identical. Middle names, hyphenation and married versus maiden names are common causes. Support can correct an account name where documentation supports it, but the payment method cannot belong to another person.
The image is unreadable
Glare, shadow and motion blur are the leading rejection reasons. Photographs taken flat on a dark surface in indirect daylight pass more reliably than scans taken at an angle.
The proof of address is out of date
Documents older than three months are not accepted. A recent bank statement or utility bill resolves this immediately.
Setting play limits before the first spin
Deposit and loss limits sit inside the registration flow, ahead of the lobby. They function as a budgeting mechanism rather than a signal of difficulty, and most players set them once and forget them. Three horizons are available: daily, weekly and monthly.
The rule governing changes matters more than the initial figure, and it is deliberately asymmetric.
| Change requested | When it takes effect |
|---|---|
| Lowering a limit | Immediately, from the moment it is confirmed |
| Raising a limit | After a waiting period, so the decision cannot be made in the middle of a session |
| Removing a limit | After the same waiting period, with a confirmation step |
Limits and their history are visible inside Safe Mate, the statistics dashboard available across SkillOnNet's Ontario brands.

Players arriving from PlayOJO, SlotsMagic or KnightSlots
SkillOnNet operates several brands in Ontario on shared infrastructure. An existing PlayOJO, SlotsMagic or KnightSlots account shortens registration: entering the same mobile number triggers a verification code, and the account is created in seconds without re-entering personal details.
Two things remain separate. Balances are held per brand, so funds do not move automatically between sites, and each brand's limits are set independently. Identity verification carries across, which is the part that saves the most time.
If something goes wrong during sign-up
Location cannot be detected
The browser or app needs permission to access location services. Turning off a VPN, enabling location in device settings and reloading the page resolves most cases. A VPN prevents the provincial location check from completing, which is why registration stops.
The mobile number is already registered
The number is attached to an existing account, possibly on a sister brand. The login page offers account recovery; support can confirm which brand holds the number.
The postal code is not accepted
Only Ontario postal codes are valid for this site. Addresses in other provinces cannot be registered, since the operating agreement covers Ontario only.
Registration is declined on age grounds
The date of birth entered falls below the provincial minimum of 19. Where a typing error is responsible, support can review the submission against identification.
Accounts under self-exclusion. Where an account is closed under a self-exclusion or cool-off arrangement, a new account cannot be opened while that period is active, and support cannot shorten it. ConnexOntario provides free, confidential support at 1-866-531-2600, 24 hours a day.
Sign-up FAQ
What documents are needed to verify an account?
Three: government-issued photo identification showing name and date of birth, proof of an Ontario address issued within the last three months, and evidence of the payment method being used. Middle card digits and the CVV should be covered before uploading.
How long does verification take?
Submissions are normally reviewed within 24 hours. Clear, well-lit images taken flat, with all four corners of the document visible, pass on the first attempt far more often than angled photographs or scans.
Can someone register from outside Ontario?
No. The AGCO registration and iGaming Ontario agreement cover Ontario only. Registration requires an Ontario address, and wagering requires physical presence in the province, confirmed at login through location services.
Is verification needed before depositing?
Yes. Ontario rules place identity verification ahead of the first deposit rather than at the point of a first withdrawal. Completing it early avoids the payout delays that verification-at-withdrawal creates elsewhere.
Can one person hold more than one account?
No. One account per person is permitted. Duplicate accounts are closed when identified, and balances are returned to the verified account holder.
Why is employment status requested?
Regulated operators are required to hold source-of-funds context on file. Collecting it during registration means a payout review later is less likely to be interrupted by a follow-up request for the same information.
Are Spin Genie and PlayOJO the same company?
Both are operated by SkillOnNet Ltd., alongside SlotsMagic and KnightSlots. They share infrastructure and identity verification, which speeds up registration for existing players, but each brand holds its own balance, its own promotions and its own limit settings.
